Our Scriptura Engage Web Designer just got better! As part of Actionable Communications in Design Studio we introduced web form controls like input fields, date pickers, dropdowns, radio buttons,… By virtue of these controls, business users can now create fully responsive and customizable web form templates ready to be published on a website, portal or even in apps.

Typically, form controls require a number of attributes, like indicating that a certain field is required (for example a name must be provided, or you cannot complete the form). Form controls are also designated as certain types such as date, a string or an amount. This allows validation against such controls and display a date picker or a time input to guide the user when filling out a form. At present, it’s also possible to define a pattern to further limit the allowed values.

Correct data

When creating a form, fields can be completely empty or they could also be prefilled with data that you already have on the customer, for example an address. This way, the customer doesn’t need to change data that is already correct.

Another advantage of using web forms is that they are very convenient and can be displayed on any device, ranging from a desktop computer to a tablet or smartphone, at any time you want. The customer only needs to enter data that is required and relevant, since the form will automatically suppress the parts that do not apply. For example, the field asking the name of a partner will not be asked if the customer has indicated before that he or she is single.

No more errors

Web forms also reduce possible errors as they check the data input against their validation rules. On top of that, by sending the data directly to the internal application, web forms can be processed fully automatically. There is no need for re-entering the data as is the case with paper forms.

Take a look at this form below. It contains a wizard that will guide a user to fill out a form to order a credit card with a bank. ‘Next’ and ‘Previous’ buttons are part of the wizard to advance to the next pane or return to the previous. Such wizards are practical if the form contains a lot of data because the user does not have to scroll through a very long list. In the screenshot below, the required fields are marked with a red bullet.

The second tab of the wizard shown above also illustrates a function that is often asked with web forms, namely the activation or deactivation of other form controls depending on a value entered into a specific control. In the above screen, the “Nr of dependents” control is set to 0. However, if you select another value from the dropdown, you will see extra fields appear, like below when the value of 2 is selected: 2 input controls have appeared to enter the names of the dependents.

The third tab of the wizard shown below illustrates another type of control: a slider to select a value from a range.

And finally, the last of the wizard tabs with a ‘Finish’ button to complete the form and submit it. When a form is submitted, a REST service is called with all the data that was filled in. This REST service could be a document flow in Scriptura Engage, or a REST service created by IT. As part of Scriptura Engage Document Flow, a confirmation could be sent via email or a PDF document created with all of the provided input. The information could also be passed on to an internal application or uploaded in a database.

Extra controls and functionalities

At the moment, we already provide a list of standard form controls as pluggable objects such as input fields (for text, numbers, dates, times, email, phone numbers…), a radio button, check buttons, submit buttons, dropdown, text area, range with bubble (slider), wizard tab group… Our Professional Services team assists if more specific controls are needed for a particular use case, or when there is a need for very specific validations, for example in case VAT numbers need to be checked with a specific web service or IBAN accounts that can be verified with a check-sum.
