Christmas comes early this year. The Scriptura Engage Web Designer, part of the Design Studio, just got a major update. Web Designer is our versatile and easy-to-use solution that empowers business users to create both basic and engaging multi-channel, responsive and actionable communications.
As of now, you can use the cloud-based tool to create your pdf communications with the greatest of ease. This update will allow you to boost business empowerment and further increase your operational efficiency, heavily reducing the time-to-market of your customer communications in the process.
Paged media format par excellence
While digital and digital forms are the talk of the town, paged media still play a major role in today’s communications. A lot of customers still prefer print communications. In our previous blog ‘How to choose the right channel’, we discussed the fact that although the rise of digital communications has led to a decrease of direct mail, the latter remains a powerful tool in the communications shed of any business. Response rates to direct mail are still ten to thirty times higher than is the case with email. Furthermore, direct mail lingers much longer in households than any other form of communication.
In many cases, paged media are used as a fallback for other communication channels. PDF, the paged media format par excellence, is universally known and everywhere: as attachments in push messages or of course in email correspondence. You’ll also find them in online portals such as Adminbox and (sometimes legally bound) archives. PDF is the standard for archiving self-contained documents. The print world also has fully embraced PDF, somewhat at the expense of other standards such as PCL or the appraised AFP.

To help you benefit more easily from the power of pdf, we have now updated our Web Designer with features that allow for the creation of correct, rich and visually appealing PDF documents. We will continue to improve these features in the future.
For example, PDF/UA-1 and various PDF/A and PDF/X profiles are now supported in the latest version. Technically, Web Designer leverages the powerful CSS Paged Media Module, which builds upon CSS and all its power and goes well beyond the capabilities of basic documents or what is possible with XSL-FO. The time that printed documents are boring by default, is long gone.
Why Web Designer?
With these recent improvements in terms of PDF support, the Web Designer truly becomes a one-stop solution for all your brand consistent communications across multiple channels. From email to push notifications and from actionable communications to effectively now PDF.
In our blog ‘Consistency across all touchpoints is the key to customer loyalty’, we talked about how consistent customer communications over the entire customer journey allow you to provide predictable and satisfactory customer experiences that build trust and a fine long term brand reputation.
Equally important however are personalized, correct, relevant and engaging communications. These documents are often highly dynamic and rely on rich business and personalization rules. By use of the Web Designer it becomes easy to specify headers, footers, margins, sections, columns, listings, well-behaved breaks and page overflows, odd/even page behavior and page numbering. This ease of use enables your business users to focus on creating correct and engaging content, data and rules, in multiple languages if needed.
The Page Section object gives control to common page settings to layout rules specific for first page and odd pages versus even pages. The QR object is available as quick link to allow integration with UnifiedPosts payment services.

The Web Designer also enables you to leverage the power of themes and styles for PDF in basically the same way you do for email, web and actionable communications. Layouts can be defined and reused and you can preview and validate various scenarios directly from your design. Master Templates provide a starting point for the different types of documents.
Also, channels such as email and images will soon be hosted online. For PDF, you can simply browse and select images from our Resource Browser. Web Designer provides a number of default objects and by using Pluggable Objects you can extend the capabilities with your brand or domain-specific objects. Our Professional Services team can assist in building and maintaining those. Web Designer is also integrated in our Resource Promotion tool, which allows business users to push changes all the way into production. More on Resource Promotion can be found in our recent blog ‘Give business control with Resource Promotion’.
